Want to Call Germany? Here Are the Codes and How to Make the Call!

Easylink Insight

For those of you planning to call or contact someone in Germany, it’s really important to first know the country’s area code, the number format, and a few other key details related to telecommunications there. Don’t end up dialing the wrong number or getting confused when you call!

In this article, I’ll explain everything you need to know about German area codes, phone number formats, emergency numbers you should remember, and how to easily call Germany from Indonesia. Be sure to read it all the way through so you’ll be fully prepared when you want to call a number in Germany!

What Is a German Area Code?

The German phone code is the country code you must enter when calling a phone number in Germany from abroad. This code is also known as the country calling code, and for Germany it is +49. So, whenever you want to call a German number from abroad, you must prefix the destination number with +49. This ensures that your call is properly routed to the telecommunications network in Germany.

In addition, this area code is also important for identifying which country you’re calling, since every country has a different international dialing code.

German Phone Number Format

Phone numbers in Germany have a slightly different format than in other countries. They usually consist of:

  • Country code: +49
  • Area code (for a specific city or region): It usually consists of 2 to 5 digits, for example, 30 for Berlin and 89 for München (Munich)
  • Local phone number: It is usually between 3 and 8 digits long

So, in full, a German phone number might look like this: +49 30 12345678

If you’re in Germany and want to make a local call, you don’t need to use the country code +49. Instead, just replace +49 with a 0 before the area code. For example, if you’re calling that Berlin number from within Germany, just dial: 030 12345678.

It’s important to know this format so you don’t enter the number incorrectly and fail to connect.

Emergency Numbers in Germany

If you're in Germany and find yourself in an emergency, it's very important to remember the following numbers:

  • 110 to contact the police
  • 112 for ambulances and fire trucks

These emergency numbers can be called at any time and from anywhere in Germany without having to add a country code or area code. In addition, calls to these emergency numbers are free.

Knowing the emergency numbers is crucial, especially if you’re living in or visiting Germany for the first time.

How Many Digits Are in a German Cell Phone Number?

Cell phone numbers in Germany usually consist of 10 to 11 digits. These cell phone numbers begin with different mobile carrier codes, for example:

  • 0151
  • 0160
  • 0170

When calling a German cell phone number from abroad, you must replace the 0 before the carrier code with +49, so that the format becomes +49 151 xxx xxxx

For example, the cell phone number 0151 1234567 becomes +49 151 1234567. This also applies when you send text messages or make international calls to cell phone numbers in Germany.
